188 stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth)

The Hero's Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (all available at http://www.clickok.co.uk/index4.html) are based on this 188+ stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.

[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].

THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY

THE HERO'S JOURNEY:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharses, of which there are usually four).

d) Gives you a universal structural template upon which you can superimpose your situational story. This is why stories such as Alien (1979), Gladiator (2000), Midnight Cowboy (1969), American Beauty (1999), The Graduate (1967) and many others (all deconstructed at the URL below) appear to be different but are all constructed, almost sequence by sequence, in the same way.

*****Time Pressure*****

Having established the Hero in his (or her) Ordinary World and his (or her) Challenges, it is quite common for there to be an urgency to embark on the Journey and Transformation. This manifests itself in a number of ways, including:

The Antagonism demonstrates his (or her) evil. The need for a resolution becomes ever more urgent. In Spiderman (2002), Norman Osborne kills his fellow scientist.

One of the characters initiates a Speed Call. In An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Lynette tells Paula to "hurry up!" In Romancing the Stone (1984), Mrs Irwin is in an awful rush.

A Pull pushes the Hero et al forward. In Titanic (1997), Jack has to run to the ship, which is about to leave. In Little Miss Sunshine (2006), the radio announces that the contest in only days away.

*****Physical Separation*****

The Hero makes a Physical Separation from the Belly of the Whale and to the Trials Transformation. Characteristics include:

Conscious Decision. The Hero often consciously decides to leave the Belly of the Whale. In Thelma and Louise (1991), Louise asks Thelma is she wants to go to Mexico. She says yes. In Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Lawrence has to go back into the desert to rescue the fallen Arab. In Dances with Wolves (1990), John Dunbar travels to the Indian village. In Raging Bull (1980), Jake has a baby and puts on weight.

Forced Out or Pursued Out. The Hero may be forced out. In Star Wars (1977), Luke et al blast off Mos Isley - pursued by storm troopers. In The Godfather (1972), Michael Corleone bids farewell to Sonny, Tessio, Paulie et al and leaves, out of necessity, for Sicily.

Hero's Journey Tip of the day

Hi,

The Hero's Journey (also known as the Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. It is upon this structure that situations are superimposed. This is why stories such as Alien (1979), Gladiator (2000), Godfather (1972), American Beauty (1999), Annie Hall (1977) and many others (all deconstructed at www.clickok.co.uk/index4.html) appear to be different but are all constructed, almost sequence by sequence, in the same way.

The following blockbusters have all been structured around the Hero's Journey template: Titanic, 1997 - grossed over $600,000,000; Star Wars, 1977 - grossed over $460,000,000; Shrek 2, 2004 - grossed over $436,000,000; ET, 1982 - grossed over $434,000,000; Spiderman, 2002 - grossed over $432,000,000. So how come you don't know it inside out?

For a number of very valid reasons, if you want to write (and sell) successful stories, whether they're Hollywood blockbusters, Indie successes, novels or other story forms, you need to master the Hero's Journey in a very detailed way...

***

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: THE MEANING OF GOODBYE

The Hero is often heard saying "goodbye" to allies before venturing into New Worlds or Thresholds. This too has meaning and is metaphoric for the "Goodbye to the Old(er) Self."

In The Karate Kid (1984), Daniel says goodbye before leaving for California.

In Platoon (1986), Taylor says goodbye to his Vietnam buddies.

In Dances with Wolves (1990), John says gooodbye to the Indians before entering the tent.

*****Inner Challenge*****

A vital part of the Hero's Ordinary Self is his (or her) Inner Challenge, which is often a deep psychological issue. In War of the Worlds (2005), Ray walks away from other workmen as they ask him favours - illustrating selfishness. In Dances with Wolves (1990), John Dunbar does not disagree that all Indians are "thieves and beggars." In The Truman Show (1998), we quickly learn that Truman is afraid of water. In Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), we learn that Indiana is afraid of snakes.

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: NATURAL INHABITANTS OF THE NEW WORLD

The Hero often battles the "Natural Inhabitants of the New World." These are simply metaphoric for obstacles that prevent the Hero's penetration into the New World.

The Penetration into the New World is simply metaphoric for the Becoming of the New Self. As the Hero penetrates deeper into the New World, he (or she) becomes a Newer Self – the function of the Journey is to induce a Transformation.

In Platoon (1986), Taylor et al battle Charlie.

In Dances with Wolves (1990), John Dunbar battles the Apache.

In Apocalypto (2006), Youngblood et al battle the hostile Mayan rulers.

Magical Aids that assist to cross Thresholds. In Dances with Wolves (x1990), John Dunbar is given a letter of transit.

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: STATUS LADDER

One useful method of measuring the dissolution of the Old Self during the Road of Trials is to watch the Hero's status. As the Hero adapts and is accepted into the New World, so his or her status in it rises until he or she becomes a leader.

In Thelma and Louise (1991), Thelma eventually eclipses Louise and takes charge.

In The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Andy Dusfresne becomes the guards' accountant.

***

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: AT LEAST TWO NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES

The Hero undergoes at least two Near Death Experiences. There are multiple functions of this, but one is: After the first, the Hero loses the fear of losing the Old Self. After the second, the Hero is reborn into the New Self.

In Platoon (1986), Taylor nearly dies in his first encounter with Charlie and in the final battle with them.

In Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Dian is initially attacked by the silverback and later confronts the French buyer and official.

In Scarface (1983), Tony initially battles the Colombians and then faces another form of death when he is arrested.

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: ENHANCEMENT OF CAPABILITIES

Post the Dragon Battle (a metaphor for obstacles that guard the Sword - which is itself a metaphor), the Hero experiences an Enhancement of Capabilities.

In Stand by Me (1986), all the boys feel invincible after dodging the train.

In Platoon (1986), Taylor feels able to follow and stop Barnes, who wants to kill Elias.

In Out of Africa (1985), Karen is no longer scared of the jungle after the battle with the lions.

The Hero is often surrounded by various archetypes, who may consciously or unconsciously block the Heralds. The Guardian is commonly, but not necessarily, a Shape Shifter or Interdictor. In Star Wars (1977), uncle Owen is the first to meet the 'droids. And he doesn't want them. In The King of Comedy (1983), Jerry's car is blocked by the mob.

The Hero does not recognise the Heralds or their impending message. In The King of Comedy (1983), Jerry does not know who Pupkin is.

A delay often frustrates the Heralds meeting with the Hero. In The King of Comedy (1983), the mob delay Pupkin reaching Jerry.

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: LOSING ATTACHMENTS

The function of the Journey is Transformation. This can be explained in many ways and one way is to look at it as "the gradual losing of attachments." The Hero ventures into a New World and gradually loses attachments to the Old World (these attachments are often represented by tangibles).

In Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Dian gradually loses the attachment to her Old boyfriend.

In Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), Ted gradually loses the attachment to his Old job.

In Educating Rita (1983), Rita gradually loses the attachment to her husband.

*****Belly of the Whale*****

This is a form of Netherworld in between the First Threshold and the World of the Transformation. It is where the Hero comes face to face with what s/he must do or be or become or face. This stage is characterised by certain elements:

Again, this is a New Domain, somewhere we have not been before. In Superman (1978), Clark travels north and builds the Ice House. In Thelma and Louise (1991), they book into a hotel.

Lack of commitment is noticeable for unwilling Heroes. In Thelma and Louise (1991), Louise doesn't yet know what to do.

New Knowledge. Here a Mentor or other guide teaches new skills and knowledge. In Superman (1978), Clark learns from Jor-El through the crystals.

What the Hero is getting into. In Harder they Fall (1956), Art shows Eddie the video.

Before the Hero begins his or her Journey and Transformation, it is not unusual for him (or her) to arrive from Another World. This is before he or she is encountered in the Ordinary World and helps explain the Hero's Fish out of Water status even in the Ordinary World.

In A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), we meet Blanche as she gets off the train and enters Stanley's World.

In The Quiet Man (1952), we meet Sean as he gets off the train in Ireland.

In The Godfather (1972), we meet Michael as he arrives in the Don's World.

*****Final Conflict: Inner Resolve*****

Post the Crossing of the Return Threshold and before the Master of Two Worlds and Selves, a hell of a lot happens that is rarely given mention. The Final Conflict (a metaphor for this stage) follows a distinct process. In Straw Dogs (1971), post the Unbearable Antagonism, David finds Inner Resolve: ".....this is where I live....I will not allow violence against this house....."

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: SUPERNATURAL AID'S CORE COMPETENCY

Superatural Aids come in many shapes and sizes. The most common form is the wretched old man or hag, but this is not necessarily a given.

The only requirement of a Supernatural Aid is that he (or she) be able to traverse both the Old and New Worlds. It is this quality that enables the Supernatural Aid to provide Magical Gifts.

In Raging Bull (1980), Vickie is able to straddle both Jake's world and the world of the mafia.

In Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Sembagare speaks both languages.

In Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), Margaret understands both Ted and Joanna.

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: THREE ACTS

There is a tendency for writers to divide their stories into three acts. If that is valid at all, then the division should be as follows (the 188 stage Hero's Journey explains each process in detail):

First, the Hero is pushed out of his (or her) Ordinary World into a New World. In The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Andy is pushed straight from college into the fashion magazine world.

Second, the Hero's Old Self gradually dissolves away until he (or she) becomes a de jure and de facto member of the New World and a New Self. In The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Andy becomes Miranda's right-hand woman and replaces Emily to go to Paris.

Third, the Hero is pushed out of the New World and away from the New Self and towards a confrontation with challenges or antagonisms until he (or she) becomes a Master of the Two Worlds and Selves. In The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Andy witnesses Miranda's sacrifices and decides she doesn't want that life, motivating her to release herself.

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: AN INTIMATE PLACE

During the Process of the Dissolution of the Old Self, the Hero is invited into an Intimate Place within the New World. The Hero's initial discomfort in this place and the eventual comfort in it is representative of the Hero's evolution.

In Dances with Wolves (1990), John Dunbar is invited into village.

In Educating Rita (1983), Frank invites Rita into his home.

In The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Andy is invited into Nigel's dressing room.

Symbolism is an underrated aspect of storytelling. A mirror is an often used symbol, that demonstrates the Hero's self analysis at the stage of the Ordinary World. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Bonnie look at herself in the mirror. In An Officer and a Gentleman (1983), Zach looks at himself in the mirror.

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: THE REAL ELIXIR

The Elixir is often a tangible, usually a treasure, crown (coronation) or similar. However, that tangible is only representative of the real prize, which is the ability to cross both Old and New Worlds and Selves at will.

In The Odd Couple (1968), Felix is ultimately able to come and go into Oscar's and the Pigeon sister's apartments.

In Barefoot in the Park (1967), Paul is ultimately able to be a stuffed shirt during the day and let loose at night.

In Gone with the Wind (1939), Scarlett is ultimately able to keep Tara and try and win Rhett back.

In An Officer and a Gentleman (1983), Foley calls Zach "Mayo(nnaise)."
